Garth Stein 2010 Huntingford Humanities Lecture Wednesday, September 29, 2010  -  6:30 p.m. Garth Stein will discuss his New York Times bestselling novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain, as well as his career. Now published in 23 languages, The Art of Racing in the Rain was the #1 BookSense selection for June 2008, the Starbucks spring/summer 2008 book selection, and has been on the IndieBound™ bestseller list since its publication. Garth is the author of two other novels, How Evan Broke His Head and Other Secrets (Soho Press, 2005) and Raven Stole the Moon (Harper Paperbacks 2010). He has also written a full-length play, Brother Jones, and produced a number of award-winning documentaries. Born in Los Angeles and raised in Seattle, Garth's ancestry is diverse - his mother, a native of Alaska, is Tlingit Indian and Irish descent; his father, a Brooklyn native, is the child of Jewish emigrants from Austria. After spending his childhood in Seattle and then living in New York City for 18 years, Garth returned to Seattle, where he currently lives with his family and his dog, Comet. Jack Nisbet Author of The Collector Wednesday, October 27, 2010  -  6:30 p.m. Jack Nisbet first told the story of British explorer David Thompson, who mapped the Columbia River, in his acclaimed Sources of the River. That book set the standard for research and narrative biography for the region. Now Nisbet turns his attention to David Douglas, the premier botanical explorer in the Pacific Northwest and other areas of western North America, in his book The Collector. Douglas' discoveries include hundreds of western plants - most notably the Douglas Fir. From 1825 to 1828, he tromped through forests, slogged through marshes, crossed desserts, climbed mountains and paddled rivers, travelling 7,000 miles throughout the Northwest. If you are a hiker, canoe enthusiast, mountain climber, or wannabe naturalist, The Collector, is for you. Nisbet is also the author of The Mapmakers Eye: David Thompson on the Columbia Plateau (WSU, 2005) and Visible Bones: Journeys Across Time in the Columbia River County (Sasquatch 2007).

Toddler Storytime Mondays at 10:15 a.m. A storytime for children ages 12 months to 30 months featuring movement, music, puppets and fingerplays as well as flannel stories and the reading of short books written with toddlers in mind.
